Definitions of common LMS terms used throughout SkillStream and this help center.

Help Center

A

Assessment
A structured test or quiz used to evaluate a learner's knowledge or skill. Assessments can be auto-graded (multiple choice, true/false) or manually graded (open-ended).

C

Certificate
A digital document issued when a learner completes a course or meets a compliance requirement. Certificates have a unique ID that can be publicly verified.
Completion
The state achieved when a learner has finished all required lessons and passed all required assessments in a course. Completion triggers certificate issuance if configured.
Competency
A defined skill, knowledge area, or behavior expected of employees in a particular role. SkillStream lets admins define competencies and link them to courses.
Curriculum
An ordered collection of courses and learning paths that form a complete training program. Curricula are often used for onboarding or role-based compliance.

E

Enrollment
The act of assigning a learner to a course. Enrollments can be created by admins (mandatory) or by learners themselves (self-enrollment).

L

Learning Path
An ordered sequence of courses that learners must complete in a specific order. Prerequisites can be enforced between steps in a path.
LMS
Learning Management System. Software used to create, deliver, manage, and track training programs. SkillStream is an LMS.

M

Module
A group of related lessons within a course. Modules help organize content into logical sections (e.g., chapters, weeks, or topics).

S

SCORM
Sharable Content Object Reference Model. A technical standard for e-learning content that ensures interoperability between authoring tools and LMS platforms. SkillStream supports SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004.
Session
A scheduled live training event (virtual or in-person). Sessions are a lesson type in SkillStream that can have dates, times, locations, and seat limits.
Single Sign-On (SSO)
An authentication method that allows users to log in with a single set of credentials (e.g., company Google or Microsoft account) across multiple systems including SkillStream.
Stipend
A fixed budget allocated to learners for purchasing courses or external training. Admins set stipend amounts and rules in SkillStream's commercial settings.

Tenant
An isolated organizational environment within SkillStream. Each organization has its own tenant with separate users, courses, and settings.

X

xAPI (Tin Can API)
Experience API. A modern e-learning standard that tracks a wider range of learning experiences than SCORM, including offline activities, simulations, and mobile learning.
